Difference Between Continuous Filament Polyester Threads – POY, FDY & DTY

Polyester yarn can be availed in multiple forms and textures, but broadly the best polyester yarn is available in three types – Partially Oriented Yarn (POY), Fully Drawn Yarn (FDY) and Draw Texturised Yarn (DTY).
SDSPL being the best textile company in Surat deals with all three types of the best polyester fabrics . The nature, brightness, texture, and use of all the continuous filament polyester threads are different. So, if you want to pick the best polyester fabric for your garment, then you have to understand the difference between POY, FDY, and DTY first.
What is Partially Oriented Yarn (POY)?
The partially oriented yarn has a very simple manufacturing process where polyester chips or flakes are melted at high flame and after that extrusion process is performed. Extrusion of polyester chips means spinning melted polyester flakes and during the spinning process – the polyester filaments are stretched to the minimum extent. The filaments are approximately stretched more than the original size.
In POY, the stretching process is performed till the desired size, strength, evenness, shrinkage and elongation properties of the polymer are formed. The term partial is used here because multiple polyester filaments are only stretched partially during the process, hence they are called partially oriented yarn by manufacturers.
As compared to fully oriented yarn, the partially oriented yarn comes with lower tenacity and less uniformity. POY is generally used to make textured yarn that can be also used in draw warping for weaving and warp knitting of fabrics.
What is Fully Drawn Yarn (FDY)?
Fully Drawn Yarn is manufactured by a similar process to POY except that the spinning process is undertaken at a higher speed. The spinning speed is increased to couple it with intermediate drawing integration in the process. This will eventually help in stabilizing the process through orientation and crystallization.
It is mostly used as warp or weft in the manufacturing process of other fabrics. FDY is a highly compatible yarn that can be easily knitted or woven with other yarn to produce a variety of fabrics. This polyester yarn is primarily used as industrial applications due to its uniformity, consistent tenacity, elongation and shrinkage. With the structure of the fully oriented yarn, multiple types of things can be manufactured like binder yarn, industrial sewing threads, and hose reinforcement.
What is Draw Texturised Yarn (DTY)?
DTY is manufactured after texturizing the partially oriented yarn with the help of texturizing machines. Polyester draws texturized yarn is the type of continuous filament yarn that has been processed to create durable crimps twists, interlaces, loops and other fine assortments along the lengths of filaments. The yarn is processed through intense thermoplastic materials that can be heated in twisted conditions to get the perfect texture. The right polyester DTY yarn has great bulk, higher stretch, and beautiful aesthetic appearance.
Draw Texturised Yarn can be manufactured into various color shades using the dope dyed technology or by conventional dyeing technique. Under the dope dying process, DTY is attached to paper using pins whereas raw DTY is dyed loosely after packing on the perforated plastic tube so that fabric can be smoothly dyed. DTY yarn can be availed in Semi Dull or Bright or Triloble Bright depending upon the type of sections of filaments. It is useful for the manufacturing of garments, furnishings, upholstery, etc.,
There are plenty of different types of polyester yarn is manufactured by polyester yarn manufacturer in India according to the varied physical properties that are dominated through the polymer. So, if you want to select the right type of yarn to manufacture beautiful garments, then you have to trust the services of the best polyester fabrics manufacturers in India – SDSPL.
